Sascha Wells-Munro, OBE

Maternity Improvement Advisor at NHS Improvement.
Former Director of Midwifery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology at University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust.

Sascha Wells-Munro was appointed in April 2018 by NHS Improvement as a Maternity Improvement Advisor to support maternity services across the country that face challenges and require significant transformation and improvement. Prior to this appointment Sascha was the Director of Midwifery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology at University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS FT. (UHMBT)

Sascha has been a midwife since 1995, qualifying and working within the West Midlands. She has worked in many areas of midwifery, both in hospital and community as well as being part of a case loading team in 1996 following the publication of Changing Childbirth. Sascha has also worked as an agency midwife in many organisations to broaden and strengthen her clinical competency and knowledge as a midwife. She has worked as a delivery suite co-ordinator in a busy maternity unit and in 2004 was appointed a Supervisor of Midwives after completing the Preparation for Supervisors of Midwives Course at degree level.

Sascha completed her Post Graduate Certificate at master’s level in Advanced Midwifery Practice in 2011 whilst in post as Maternity Matron at Nottingham University Hospitals from 2009.

Sascha joined UHMBT in May 2011 at a time when maternity services were under extensive regulatory review and scrutiny due to failures in service and care provision which tragically resulted in several maternal and neonatal deaths.

Over the 7 years in post at UHMBT Sascha led Maternity Services from special measures through extensive and much needed transformation and change, which in 2017 resulted in CQC rating maternity services across Morecambe Bay as good.

Sascha led and facilitated her exceptional teams to engage with and listen to what women and families really want and need for maternity services, which informed the design and underpinned t transformation of Maternity Services at UHMBT.

Sascha is an advocate and facilitator of co-design and co-production of services believing that women and families as well as all front-line staff are the best people to shape and design change and improvement in maternity services.

Sascha is committed to supporting women to achieve a safe active birth and is a passionate midwife. She believes that Midwifery must remain a distinct profession to ensure that women and families continue to receive the high quality, safe maternity care that midwives, and maternity support workers provide alongside their other professional colleagues as part of a multi-professional team

Sascha has been involved in several national projects, the most recent being contributing to the development of the New Midwifery Standards for education with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, (NMC) known as the Future Midwife project. Sascha is a member of the Midwifery Council at the NMC as well as being appointed as a member of the Multi-professional Expert Advisory Panel for Baby Lifeline in April 2019. In July 2019 Sascha was also voted for by the Royal College of Midwives (RCM) members to be appointed to the RCM Board, taking up post in September 2019.

Sascha was awarded an OBE in the New Years Honours list in 2020 for services and her contribution to the NHS and patient safety.
