Background: Laura is initially from Carlisle but moved to London to begin working for the London Ambulance Service in 2014 as a Student Paramedic. She qualified as a Band Six Paramedic in 2016 and continues to work for the service on both ambulances and first response vehicles. In 2019 Laura joined St.Georges University of London as a Senior Lecturer in Clinical Simulation and Out of Hospital Care and currently enjoys combining both these clinical and educational roles.
Obstetric experience: Since qualifying Laura has been present at many births in the community, including in many dynamic environments such as at the roadside, in the back of a car and even locked in a patients house when advised by police that a knifeman was on the loose outside! Due to working on first response vehicles Laura has attended many of these births on her own and has attended complications such as a shoulder dystocia. Laura has a passion for prehospital obstetric care and has completed the POET course and additional post-graduate modules in Women and Children’s Health.
Job Role: Laura currently works as a Paramedic in Southwest London for the London Ambulance Service. She is also a Senior Lecturer and Module Lead on the BSc Paramedic Science course at St.George’s University of London. As part of her role, she is responsible for the Obstetric teaching to over 340 student paramedics annually. Laura has coordinated joint simulation training days with the BSc Midwifery team and students.
Future aspirations: Laura hopes to develop her clinical skills further and gain a position as a Critical Care Paramedic with the Air Ambulance. She is currently completing her MSc in Emergency and Resuscitation Medicine at Queen Mary University Part time. She would love to some day dual register as a midwife but unfortunately cannot return to full time education just yet!
