Programme

  • How does a multi-disciplinary team perform at a consistently high level, even with inexperienced members?

  • How do you define your team - do you include the mother?

  • What constitutes effective leadership?

  • How should we use the different conceptual approaches to personal and team decision making?

  • How does vulnerability to human error impact on team performance?

  • Is communication amongst team members as effective as possible in fast-moving, complex situations?

“I know you believe you understand what you think I said, but I’m not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.”

This two-day programme focuses on improving leadership, team working and communication by developing conscious awareness of our own behaviours and that of our colleagues, to help make maternity units safer and better places in which to work. We will be deconstructing behaviour in an interactive and lively manner, using processes derived from Prof. James Reason’s work on the classification of human error as tried and tested in the aviation and nuclear industries and now rolling out into healthcare. Atrainability and Baby Lifeline Training have specifically created this programme for maternity teams and the unique issues they face.

At the end of the day you will be equipped to improve the overall performance of your team through:

  • Improved self-awareness

  • A deeper understanding of effective leadership and team working behaviours

  • Awareness of different responses to pressure and high workload amongst the team

  • Earlier recognition of warning signs of team breakdown so as to facilitate rapid intervention

  • Improved open communication and questioning styles to engage more collective knowledge and reduce the margin of error

  • Faster and safer decision-making and improved risk management

  • Team briefing and de-briefing to enhance knowledge and share learning
